2019 HOT LIST!

Birds are chirping, the daffodils are beginning to sprout, and our sleepy little Grey Lady is waking up from her winter hibernation. Local businesses are hitting the cobblestones running with new openings, fresh events, and collaborations galore! And here we present you with our 2019 Hot List, always jam pACKed with what you need to know to get in that Nantucket state of mind for the glorious months to come…

If you can’t handle the heat of our first Hot List, then you gotta get out of this kitchen… ’cause it’s official! Ventuno, one of our Federal Street dining favorites, is taking over the former space of Sushi by Yoshi and creating PIZZERIA GEMELLE (pronounced GEM-EL-LAY) which translates to twins in Italian. (Chef/owner Andrea Solimeo above seen with his twin daughters Emilia and Annabella, alongside Gemelle co-owner Taylor Oliver)

You better call Dave Portnoy because this pizza joint is gonna be poppin’! GEMELLE will not only be tossing the dough and creating fresh 12 inch pies, but will also have Nantucket’s first cordial license serving, Aperol spritzes, amaro, limoncello and more. This hotspot will have a family friendly menu that includes house-made pizza, gelato and a selection of sliced meats. According to Oliver, the idea was to find the perfect balance of that beloved Neapolitan dough and structured New York slice. Word on Chestnut Street is you’ll find super creative pizzas which will utilize the best of Nantucket including Bartlett’s tomatoes and Nantucket bay scallops when in season. Slated to open in late April from 11AM to 11PM, PIZZERIA GEMELLE will ultimately be open 7 days a week AND get stoked for late night slices when they extend their hours till last call during the summer!
TAKE TWO! The Ventuno team is also taking over the dining space at Greydon House with a new dining concept named VIA MARE where they will be serving up a delicious Venetian style seafood menu under executive chef Sarah Todd. Set to open in early April, you’ll find a brand new menu of primarily creative small plates that will take your tastebuds on a trip around the world, all matched alongside the gorgeous aesthetic of the Roman & Williams designed dining space … you will feel fully transported on this culinary adventure! We also hear that the Via Mare’s bubbly offerings will range from approachable to unusual to extravagant, so cheers to that! VIA MARE will be serving dinner only, from 5:30PM till 10PM, 7 nights a week in season with the bar remaining open until last call. TAKE NOTE… both places will provide year round dining happiness and are set to open for all four seasons.

Hot food truck news! Starting in late April, you’ll notice a new offering at Nobadeer and Cisco Beach… a food trailer serving up traditional Hawaiian Poke Bowls using sustainable sushi-grade fish and fresh ingredients! Nantucket Poke’s co-founders Devon Wright and Chef Alla Rockwell decided to bring the trendy Hawaiian dish to Nantucket Island where seafood is also abundant. Chef Rockwell chooses the finest cuts of local fish and for rice she follows a 100-year-old recipe that makes for a delish base. BONUS: The trailer is also available to cater your next event! It will be set up at the beaches 7 days a week from 11AM-4PM with location info posted via social media and the truck locator on their website. Not able to make it out to the beach? No problem! Their whole menu is available for delivery to the entire island with the crew from the ACK Eats App. INSIDER TIP: mention blACKbook for a complimentary Chameleon cold brew coffee off their nitro keg on your first visit!

Hot to the cobblestone streets is a fresh new bistro on Main Street and with its unique namesake Or, The Whale has a cool bACKstory. When naming his classic American novel, Herman Melville was torn between two titles –  “Moby Dick; or, The Whale”. Most people know it by the former, while Sandbar owners Nick Nass and George Kelly along with Jamie Lee Nass, Emily Berger, and Chef Manny Rojas went with the latter. This casual American spot on our storied Main Street will serve brunch daily from 8am-2:30pm and dinner from 5-9pm with light bites served between meal times. The 22-seat dining bar will be open all day with a newly renovated dining room and outdoor patio seating to boot. BONUS: If you don’t have time to dine in the morning, you can grab a coffee and one of Manny’s daily doughnuts right from their to-go counter!
