Did you know… Nantucket is super dog friendly? Don’t let your pups stay at home when they can be exploring the fantastic island of ACK! So Miss blACKbook turned to summer visitor Amanda Carlo to get a peek into what it’s like to pACK up your pooch and come to your happy place! Here is part one of three!

dog beach ACK
Nantucket is without a doubt our favorite getaway for countless reasons, but it tops the list because my husband and I are able to have our two dogs join us in paradise. Whether we are staying for a quick weekend or for an extended vacation, we cherish the fact that they are able to sit next to us for Madaket sunsets and libations at Cisco Brewery. An added bonus is not having to shell out extra bucks for a dog sitter while we’re away- and that, my friends, adds up quickly. Money saved on pet sitting equals more funds for ice cream at the Juice Bar and cocktails at Galley Beach. See where I’m going here? Priorities, people!
We’ve put together a three part blACKbook series on how to best experience the paradise known as Nantucket with your pet. As you’ll see, the island is incredibly pet-friendly with a wide variety of fabulous places to stay, shop, dine & play with your pup!

Part One

getting bACK + forth

Generally speaking, traveling with your creature can be a huge (and pricey) hassle. When coming to Nantucket, getting bACK and forth with your pet is half the fun! Fortunately, whether you want to travel by plane or boat, HyLine Cruises, Steamship Authority, and CapeAir all have great options for getting to ACK with your pet in tow.

dog ferry
If you fancy the ferry, both HyLine and Steamship allow pets to ride at your side with no additional cost. There are specific areas on the boat in which pets are allowed and they must be leashed at all times, but generally speaking, it’s a very easy process and has always been pleasant for us.

Prefer to fly? You’ll need to call to make a reservation as there are certain restrictions on pets per flight (typically one is allowed unless they are in the same family and don’t have sibling rivalry issues. Seriously.). An added bonus about flying with your dog on Cape Air is that you don’t need to haul one of those obnoxiously large kennels to the airport, then load your dog into the bowels of the plane and worry the entire flight about their sanity and safety. As long as your dog is leashed and out of the way of other passengers, they are approved to fly sitting next to you! Unless they are a cat… and then they need to be in a carrier (who puts their cat on a leash?!). There is a $10 fee per pet on CapeAir flights departing from Boston, Providence, White Plains and New Bedford, which is extremely reasonable compared to other airlines. To learn more about flying with your pet on CapeAir, visit CapeAir Online for details.

Once you arrive on Nantucket, you may realize you forgot to pACK a necessity for your furry friend. Whether it’s food, toys or leashes (how could someone forget a leash? It happens… don’t ask), ACK has many options to spoil your pet and make them feel right at home. We are lucky that both Stop N Shop locations on island have our dogs’ favorite food for sale, Rachael Ray’s™ “Nutrish®” which is great in case we are running low on their premium-ingredient food while in paradise.
Cold noses interior
Geronimo’s (located mid-island) and Cold Noses (Geronimo’s sister store on Straight Wharf), has a fantastically curated collection of designer pet beds, organic food & treats and fun toys to keep your pet entertained. We often come home with more souvenirs for our dogs than for us – which is both ridiculous and necessary.

Our boutique favorites are the ACK-inspired leashes and collars in seersucker with a variety of nautical prints like lobsters, shells, and anchors. So even when you’re walking your pet at home in the frigid New England winter, you’ll see their adorable collar, smile and wax nostalgic about your time on the Rock. And quickly start plotting your next trip to the island…
