Over the past decade, Current Vintage has transformed the retail scene on 4 Easy Street. Owner Beth English has created a niche store turned Nantucket staple all about the Vintage and the Vintage… clothing and wine! This is a space unlike any other here on the island and everyone from locals to visitors to celebrities can always find something special at CV! So as we get ready to toast to their ten year anniversary, here are the ten things to note about this oh so chic boutique!
1. THE ONE & ONLY BETH ENGLISH
After years of working in the restaurant industry here on Nantucket, Beth English thought what all of us think about: How can I do something that I love all the time? She began to ponder her passions – wine and clothing. And then had that ah-ha moment when she realized it was “Vintage and Vintage,” and she began to create her life in a store. This ever-evolving boutique is truly a beautiful reflection of the owner herself. Beth is the visionary behind the space, and you’ll find her smiling face day in and out as she combines her job and her joy with Current Vintage.
2. THAT CV LIFESTYLE
Clever, chic, unique…however you want to describe that CV lifestyle, it’s all about living with zest and humor and you can always find that with Beth’s hand-picked super soft tee shirts and sweatshirts. Over the past ten years, Current Vintage has become synonymous with creating a fun and festive brand… And you can feel that the minute you wear a CV piece out on the town.
3. THE CV HOSPITALITY
After decades in the hospitality industry here on Nantucket, it’s no wonder why Beth exudes that entertaining vibe at her store. Inside CV you’ll find food, fashion and vino lovers who are just as excited to share their latest fromage find with you as they are to tell you the bACK stories on the vintage pieces inside. Speaking of entertaining, this year Beth added the CV Pantry full of snacks and gifts and expanded their cheese selection to further complement their brand of wine & entertaining. From the funniest cocktail napkins to vintage cheese platters to the cheese you put on it, CV is a one-stop-shop for hospitality.
4. THAT CV TEAM
Beth admits, it take a village to create a store on the island, and while it is a super labor intensive business, it is labor of love. “Nobody gets to ten years by themselves,” Beth told us as she sat down to discuss her years of business here. “Two of my employees, Rosie and Kelly, have been here since the very beginning.” She says she feels blessed to have so many great women and men surrounding her at the store…the heart if it all is the team.
5. THAT cV WINE
. “Wine is all about discovery,” Beth said. “And that discovery becomes a lifestyle.” Over the past decade, Current Vintage has become well known for its curated vino selection. And Beth says she finds her new favorites every year in three different ways. First, from traveling and tasting at vineyards around the world. Second, from dining at restaurants on island and off. And third, by having her customers who come into the store with a new favorite find of their own, saying, “Try this, Beth!” And just like that…another gem is found.
6. THAT CV CLOTHING
From Pucci to vintage Lilly, signature accessories to lucite purses, fishbowl necklaces to Whiting & Davis snake bracelets, the fashion is always at the forefront at CV. After ten years, this proves to be the space on Nantucket where you can find a chic dress or a fabulous outfit that, you can be sure, you’ll be the only person rocking at those Nantucket events!
7. THE cV TRAVELS
Speaking of travel, to get all these incredible wines and rare clothing finds to 4 Easy Street, Beth spends her off-season on her “annual journey” around the globe, feverishly seeking her favorite new wines and vintage clothing. It starts with a road trip in California and takes her all the way to France and bACK as she hand selects her yearly favorites. “There is no magic formula,” Beth says on how she curates the collections every year. It’s just about patience and practice and the art of going somewhere new and feeling inspired…and then bringing that inspiration back to our little Grey Lady.
8. cV & NANTUCKET WINE FEST
Is it the Nantucket Wine & Food Festival…or is it Beth’s Prom? Either way, this May weekend is always a highlight of the CV year, as Beth opened her doors for the first time during Wine Festival 2008. Over the past ten years, Current Vintage has become an “unofficial hub” for sharing and socializing and sipping with wine makers, sommeliers, guest chefs and tasters alike! “It’s all an adventure,” Beth said. “During Nantucket Wine Festival especially, CV becomes the locus for guests who appreciate what we do and want to connect.”
9. THOSE cV EVENTS
From benefit fashion shows in ‘Sconset to Galley Beach runway shows on the sand to N Magazine photo shoots and beyond, it’s all about the fashion experience and seeing the vintage clothing in action! Over the past ten years, Beth and her team have created numerous stylish events to showcase her lifestyle in action.
Her always visually pleasing Galley Beach shows were our summer fashion show favorite!
10. THAT CV BRAND
. After ten years in the business, Beth decided to update her mermaid and give CV a fresh look! “Just like the store, the mermaid is ever evolving.” Her iconic logo began as an elegant mermaid in 2008 and has now transformed into a more playful one. The brand, like the finds in the store, is ever-evolving, high-spirited, and full of life. And we can’t wait to see where Beth, our island Mermaid, takes us next.
